A butler salary in a UK private home runs from about £50,000 to £105,000 a year gross in agency guides, and head butlers at large principal residences are quoted up to £150,000. In the US, one guide puts butlers at principal residences at $110,000 to $190,000, without stating the basis.
These figures come from agencies that place butlers. There's no official government pay figure for private butlers, so treat them as guides, not official rates.
Butler salary in the UK
| Role | Pay (gross a year) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Butler | £65,000 to £105,000 | One private staffing agency's 2026 guide |
| Head butler, large principal residence | £95,000 to £150,000 | One private staffing agency's 2026 guide |
| Butler | £50,000 to £100,000 | One international agency's 2025/26 report |
| Butler | £50,000 to £80,000+ | Another agency's guide |
The ranges differ because each agency recruits for different homes, and the top end reflects large principal residences. The 2026 guide's figures are for full-time, live-out roles, and it was last updated on 9 October 2026. The guide in the last row was last modified on 7 April 2026, and the international report sets a lower floor than the 2026 guide, at £50,000.
The 2026 guide adds that formal butlers with silver service experience at significant estates are paid more than its standard range, though it doesn't give a figure. For live-in roles, it says pay varies with the value of the accommodation.
Butler salary in the US and Europe
| Market | Pay | Basis | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States, principal residences | $110,000 to $190,000 | Basis not stated (reads as annual) | One private staffing agency's 2026 guide |
| United States, top of market | Up to $180,000 | Basis not stated | One international agency's 2026 industry report |
| Monaco and the South of France | €6,000 to €9,500 net | Butlers and chefs grouped together; period not stated (the same guide's housekeeper figures there are per month) | One private staffing agency's 2026 guide |
| Switzerland | CHF 7,500 to 13,000 | Butlers and chefs grouped together; gross or net and period not stated (the same guide's housekeeper figures there are per month) | One private staffing agency's 2026 guide |
US packages more often include private health insurance, 401(k) contributions and formal bonus structures, according to the same 2026 guide. Separately, one international agency's 2026 industry report names the US as the highest-paying country for butlers, at $180,000 in its top earners table.
In Monaco, the 2026 guide says tax-adjusted gross figures are often 20% to 40% higher than net. For a sense of scale, it lists housekeepers there at €3,800 to €7,000 net per month, and in Switzerland at CHF 5,500 to 8,500 per month.
These are agency guides with different bases, and two of the rows group butlers with chefs. Compare like with like: gross with gross, net with net, and a year with a year.
What a UK butler salary pays after tax
For a full-time butler in England, Wales or Northern Ireland in 2026/27, on a standard tax code with no pension or student loan, take-home after income tax and National Insurance is about:
- £65,000 a year: £4,021 a month (£48,257.40 a year after £13,432.00 income tax and £3,310.60 National Insurance)
- £80,000 a year: £4,746 a month (£56,957.40 a year)
- £105,000 a year: £5,871 a month (£70,457.40 a year)
Every UK range above reaches the higher-rate band: 40% income tax runs from £50,270 to £125,140, and National Insurance drops from 8% to 2% on monthly earnings above £4,189.
Above £100,000 the tax-free Personal Allowance starts to disappear, falling by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income, so on head butler salaries above that point, more of each rise goes in tax. Our house manager salaries guide explains how the £100,000 tax trap works. Scotland has different income tax bands.
What pushes a butler's pay up
Scope comes first in these figures. Head butler roles at large principal residences sit at the top of the UK ranges, and the 2026 guide pays formal silver service experience at significant estates above its standard range.
Market comes next. US principal-residence roles are quoted higher than UK ones in these guides, and packages there often add health insurance, retirement contributions and bonuses.
It also helps to be clear what the job is. Another agency's guide describes the butler as a senior service role focused on personal service, while the house manager runs the household and its staff. How people become butlers
If you're working out how to become a butler, none of the guides above sets out a single route. What they do show is what's paid: formal silver service, experience at significant estates and, at the top, head butler roles at large principal residences.
