The couples who do well in the houses we work with have usually spent years working side by side. One runs the inside of the house, the other keeps the grounds, the pool and the cars in order, and they sort things out between themselves before anyone has to ask.
If you're looking at domestic couple jobs in Spain or Gibraltar, that kind of couple is exactly what households want, and it's hard to find. In one international agency's 2026 industry report, a domestic couple search drew about 24 applications on average, against about 112 for a personal assistant, and the agency calls the domestic couple one of the hardest roles to fill anywhere. That scarcity works in your favour. We're HouseHoldTalent, a network founded in Gibraltar that introduces household staff to private homes in Gibraltar and on the Costa del Sol.
What a domestic couple job actually is
A domestic couple is a two-person team who run a private home together. Usually one partner works mainly inside the house and the other mainly outside, on the cars and the grounds.
The most common split is housekeeper and houseman: one takes cleaning, laundry, linens, ironing, light cooking and guest rooms, the other takes the exterior, repairs, driving, errands and security. Another is cook and caretaker, where one partner runs the kitchen and the other looks after the grounds, pools, cars and suppliers. Butler and housekeeper pairs exist too, but they're the least common.
In practice, the lines blur. Villa ads we've seen in Ibiza list housekeeping, laundry and wardrobe care, meals, deep cleaning, entertaining, garden oversight, contractors, minor repairs, vehicles and guest services as duties shared between both partners.
Most roles are live-in, with your own accommodation on the property, often a cottage or chalet in the grounds.
Domestic couple jobs in Spain: salary in a villa or on a finca
Pay varies more than for almost any other household role. These are figures we've seen, each with its basis as the source gave it.
| Type of role | What we've seen | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Luxury villa, Ibiza (agency ad, filled) | €4,000 to €5,000 a month, plus a one bedroom cottage and use of a car | Net, per couple |
| Luxury villa, Mallorca (agency ad, filled) | €75,000 to €85,000 a year over 13 payments, plus a two bedroom chalet and a car | Gross, per couple |
| Agency guide ranges for Spain | €3,000 to €6,000 a month, plus accommodation; another agency quotes €5,000 to €8,000 | Net, per couple |
| Live-in couple or caretakers, Madrid agency rate card 2026 | From €1,500 a month each, plus two extra payments a year | Per person |
| Rural finca caretakers, Valladolid (2024 ad) | €22,500 a year each, plus housing on the estate | Gross, per person |
The same job title can pay several times more in a luxury villa than on a rural finca. The difference comes from the level of service, how many years the couple have worked together, languages, cooking, references from private households and whether the house is used for entertaining.
There is a legal floor. Spain's minimum wage for 2026 is €1,221 a month in 14 payments for a full-time job. If housing or meals are part of the deal, the employer can only deduct for them if at least the minimum wage is still paid in cash, and total deductions can't go above 30% of the salary.
On the Costa del Sol, the top of the market looks much like the islands. One agency ad we've seen for a large villa in Benahavís, above Marbella, offered €90,000 to €100,000 gross a year for the couple, with a separate four bedroom villa to live in and a car for each partner, for 50 hours a week over five days. We haven't yet seen published couple salaries for Sotogrande or Gibraltar.
What households look for in a couple
The ads we've seen ask for remarkably similar things. Several years working together as a couple comes first, with 2, 5 or 6 years quoted. Both partners need driving licences. Strong English is expected, with working Spanish; one Mallorca ad asked for English or German. Cooking skills matter, and so does property management for the partner who works outside. References from private households are standard, and so is the right to work in Spain, with some ads asking for EU passports.
A couple works best in a house when they settle disagreements privately, never in front of the family, and keep a clear split of who does what.
Households hire the pair, so the weaker partner's experience sets the level. If that sounds like you and your partner, apply together.
Your rights as a live-in couple in Spain
Household work in Spain is governed by Real Decreto 1620/2011. This is a plain summary.
Each of you is an employee in your own right. The employer must register each of you with Social Security, and can do so up to 60 days before the start date and no later than the start date itself. Registration is required whatever the number of hours.
Either side can ask for the contract in writing, and you must be told about any accommodation or board counted as pay, any agreed time on call, and any overnight arrangements. Actual work is capped at 40 hours a week. Time on call can't average more than 20 hours a week over a month unless it's compensated with paid rest, and it's paid at no less than normal hours.
You're entitled to 12 hours' rest between working days. For live-in staff that can drop to 10, with the rest made up within four weeks, and live-in staff get at least two hours a day for main meals that don't count as work. Weekly rest is 36 consecutive hours, and holiday is 30 calendar days a year, with at least one block of 15 consecutive days. You also get two extra payments a year.
This is a summary, not legal advice. Read the full text of Real Decreto 1620/2011 and the Social Security guidance on registering household employees, and have a gestor check your contract.
Working as a couple in Gibraltar
In Gibraltar, each partner is also a separate worker. The employer registers the vacancy with the Department of Employment, files a Notice of Terms of Engagement for every worker, and can't pay below the minimum wage, which has been £10 an hour since 1 August 2026.
A work permit is only needed if you're not a British, EU, EEA or Swiss national, and the employer applies for it before you start. Most people who work in Gibraltar live in Spain and cross each day, so read our guide to living in Spain and working in Gibraltar for how the rules differ by nationality.
Coming from yachting?
One agency co-founder puts it bluntly: "People who used to work as a couple in the yachting industry, this is the best of the best." Interior experience maps onto the inside of a house and deck experience onto the grounds, pools and cars, and you already know how to live and work in a small space together. Our guide for yacht crew covers how each role on board translates ashore.
How to get hired as a couple
Present yourselves as one team, with a short joint summary at the top of your CV and each person's own experience below it.
Line up references from households you worked for together, naming both of you. A glowing reference for one partner says little about the pair.
Be clear about who leads on the kitchen, the house, the garden and the cars, and just as clear about where you overlap.
At interview, ask about the accommodation, your days off together, how often there are guests, any children or pets, and how much of the year the house is used. And insist on two contracts and two Social Security registrations, one each, as set out in the rights section above.
How HouseHoldTalent works for couples
Membership is free for approved candidates, and a real person on our team reviews every application, both partners included. Your profiles stay anonymous, and a household only gets your details if you agree to the introduction; here's how introductions work.
To apply as a couple, each of you fills in the application: choose Domestic Couple as your role, answer yes to "Are you applying as a couple?" and add your partner's name and email. We'll review you together. See the roles we're filling now, or send us your details as a couple.

Each partner is employed in their own right, and the employer must register each of you with Social Security.
